Certified Translation for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) requires that all supporting documents not in English or French be accompanied by certified translations. Whether you’re applying through Express Entry, sponsoring a family member, seeking refugee protection, or applying for Canadian citizenship — every foreign-language document needs a certified translation.

IRCC’s translation requirements are similar to USCIS but not identical. Canada accepts translations into English or French (applicant’s choice), and IRCC has specific requirements for translator declarations that differ from U.S. standards.

Corpus Localization provides certified translations that meet IRCC requirements for all Canadian immigration programs. Our translations include the translator affidavit/declaration format that IRCC expects — not just a U.S.-style certificate of accuracy.

What Does IRCC Require for Translation?

IRCC requires translations to include:

  1. Complete translation of the entire document
  2. Translator’s certification — a signed statement that the translation is accurate
  3. Translator’s name, signature, and contact information
  4. Statement of competency in both languages
  5. Date of translation
  6. Translator must not be the applicant, a family member, or anyone with a vested interest

IRCC also requires that translations be done by a certified translator where available. In Canada, this means a member of a provincial translator association (ATIO, OTTIAQ, etc.). For translations done outside Canada, IRCC accepts translations from qualified professional translators — like those at Corpus Localization, an ATA corporate member.

Our translations include all required certification elements in the format IRCC expects.

Express Entry (Federal Skilled Worker, CEC, FST)

Express Entry applicants need translated:

  • Educational credentials (for WES or other ECA evaluation)
  • Language test results (if not in English/French)
  • Employment references and letters
  • Identity documents
  • Police certificates from countries of residence

Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP)

Each province has its own requirements, but all require certified translations of supporting documents — educational credentials, work experience letters, and identity documents.

Family Sponsorship

Sponsoring a spouse, parent, child, or other family member requires translated:

  • Birth certificates (sponsor and applicant)
  • Marriage certificates
  • Divorce decrees (if applicable)
  • Relationship evidence
  • Police certificates

Canadian Citizenship

Citizenship applications may require translated:

  • Foreign identity documents
  • Travel documents
  • Supporting evidence from the PR application

Refugee Protection

Refugee claimants need translated:

  • Identity documents
  • Evidence supporting the claim
  • Country condition documents
  • Personal declarations

Study and Work Permits

International students and temporary workers may need translated:

  • Academic credentials
  • Employment letters
  • Financial documents
  • Identity documents

Translation for Educational Credential Assessment (ECA)

Express Entry requires an Educational Credential Assessment from a designated organization. The most common is WES Canada (World Education Services).

WES Canada requires certified translations of all non-English and non-French academic documents — transcripts, diplomas, and degree certificates. Our translations are accepted by WES Canada and all other IRCC-designated ECA organizations:

  • WES (World Education Services)
  • IQAS (International Qualifications Assessment Service)
  • University of Toronto CES
  • ICAS (International Credential Assessment Service)
  • MCC (Medical Council of Canada)
  • PEBC (Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada)
